Total Law Enforcement Personnel

Select a County
Measurement Period: 2022
This indicator shows the annual number of law enforcement personnel.

Why is this important?

Hiring law enforcement personnel is the most common policy instrument for crime prevention by local governments. However, there has been growing concern surrounding the over-policing of communities, especially communities of color. The issues of race, policing and crime are at the forefront of racial equity discussions and have, in turn, become a public health crisis. Statistics continue to suggest communities of color are over-represented across all stages of the criminal justice system. Research from the Sociology Department at Tufts University shows predominantly Black neighborhoods are simultaneously over-policed when it comes to surveillance and social control, and under-policed when it comes to emergency services.
