Many of the major causes of morbidity and mortality in the United States are related to poor diet and physical inactivity.  Obesity is caused by a complex interaction of genetic, metabolic, behavioral, social and environmental factors, and is associated with adverse health, social and economic consequences. It is the primary cause of type 2 diabetes. It is also a major contributing factor to heart disease, stroke, cancer, asthma, arthritis, and a number of psychological conditions, including depression. Without strong action to reverse the obesity epidemic, for the first time in our history, children are predicted to have a shorter lifespan than their parents.

Focus Area 1: Reduce Obesity in Adults

Goal 1: Create community environments that promote and support healthy food and beverage choices and physical activity.

Objective 1.1: To reduce the age-adjusted percentage of Greene County adults who are obese by 5% from 31.04% to 29.5%.

Objective 1.2: To increase the percentage of Greene County residents engaged in leisure-time activity by 4.8% from 64.9% to 68%.

Columbia Memorial Health

Focus Area: Reduce Obesity in Children and Adults

Goal 1: Increase the proportion of babies who are breastfed.

Objective 1.1: By December 31, 2018, increase breastfeeding rates for all infants birthing at CMH by 5% from 58.9% to 61.9%

Objective 1.2: By December 31, 2018, increase the breastfeeding rate at hospital discharge in Columbia and Greene Counties from 64% to 74%.

Objective 1.3: By December 31, 2018, increase the breastfeeding rate in Columbia and Greene Counties from 64% to 74%.
